Parents/Legal guardians of college freshmen!
If your child has not received notification from their academic institution regarding financial aid(please have them log into their student account), you need to contact the financial aid office. If you are within driving distance, I would advise you to GO WITH YOUR CHILD on campus, to check on the status of their financial aid.
Also remember if this is your child's first time attending college, and they are receiving financial aid, the FAFSA, MPN, and entrance counseling MUST BE COMPLETED in order for them to be awarded financial aid. All three must be completed online at https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing
ALSO, your child can not complete the FAFSA as an independent student, even if they do not reside with you, unless they meet criteria set forth by the U.S. Dept of Education.
The criteria used by the U.S. Dept of Education to determine independent status is as follows:
"An independent student is one of the following: at least 24 years old, married, a graduate or professional student, a veteran, a member of the armed forces, an orphan, a ward of the court, someone with legal dependents other than a spouse, an emancipated minor, or someone who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless."
If you have further questions, inbox/text/call Mrs. Owens.
